Catherine Schmetter

Catherine is an award winning visual and performing artist. She has been social dancing since the age of 7 and was formally trained in the fine arts at the Rhode Island School of Design.

In 2001 Catherine began dancing at Dance Manhattan and immediately began to explore the shared characteristics and disciplines in the worlds of dance and design- finding joy in the self exploration and expression offered by both.

She has been dancing, competing, performing, and teaching in many styles of partner dancing, with a focus in swing/lindy hop. Her teaching, in both the visual and performance arenas, places a strong emphasis on the foundations: technique, form, texture, composition and expression.

In her collaborations with Joe Palmer, she has created, co-produced and performed in many productions including Measurements; The Makings of a New Musical, A Night At Versailles, A Murderous Affair, and the all jazz version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice In Wonderland. Catherine and Joe are also co-founders of The Artists’ Lab; a welcoming environment for artists of all genres dedicated to creative exploration, collaboration and inspiration. In addition to individual creative pursuits, they extend their knowledge and love of art to the community through classes, workshops and social events including gallery openings, dances and performances across the country.

When not dancing, Catherine designs and produces an independent clothing label called MAVEN and creates original costumes for dancers, jazz vocalists, and chic women throughout the US.
